Qld: Campaign to help kickstart Australian Airlines

A fresh marketing push into Japan and Asia will help kickstart Australia's newest low-costairline, Australian Airlines.

Qantas chief executive GEOFF DIXON has announced Australian Airlines will begin operationson October 27, initially flying between Cairns and six Asian ports -- Osaka, Fukuoka andNagoya in Japan, and Singapore, Taipei and Hong Kong.

The second stage of services is expected to begin next year between Thailand, Malaysiaand possibly Sydney.

The Australian Tourist Commission has committed $1 million to develop new marketingprograms with Australian Airlines and other industry partners.

ATC managing director KEN BOUNDY says the programs will begin immediately, with theadvertising campaign to start later this year to ensure they capitalise on the new servicesto Australia.

Mr BOUNDY says the new airline will boost the industry's recovery after the terroristattacks on September 11 and the collapse of Ansett.
