ESSEX County Council Trading Standards is warning householdersagainst being conned out of cash by cowboy builders and roguetraders if their houses have been damaged by the recent storms.
With legitimate roofers, builders, plumbers, carpenters and othertradesmen expected to be working at full stretch over the next fewdays, Trading Standards is concerned that dishonest traders willtake advantage of the situation and approach residents, includingthose who are vulnerable.
Traders who knock on your door or only leave you a mobile numbermay not have a permanent address and might not be contactable if anyproblems arise.
Legitimate traders will not have time to come and knock on yourdoor.
Essex county councillor Roger Walters, who has responsibility fortrading standards, told the Gazette: "Unscrupulous traders makemoney out of others' misfortune. They will give the impression thatthey are providing you with a service you require, when actuallythey will rip you off.
"I would advise anyone that needs repair work on their homes toonly use reputable companies." Residents are also advised to speakto their insurance companies before engaging anyone to carry outrepair work. If you have been contacted by a doorstep trader andyou need advice or want to pass on information that TradingStandards can use to stop these rogue traders, call Consumer Directon 08454 04 05 06.
