The federal opposition has defended its tough approach to a long-standing parliamentary
convention, saying it's up to the government to ensure all its MPs are available for votes

The coalition will refuse to grant a pair to any Labor MP who is unable to attend parliament

CHRISTOPHER PYNE, the manager of opposition business, has told the ABC that there will
be no pairs except in exceptional circumstances, and it's up to the government to schedule

Vic: Organisers hope 40,000 people will go to Dawn Service
MELBOURNE, April 23 AAP - One 96-year-old veteran will be making his Anzac Day debut
on Sunday, but former British soldier Reg Dickinson would rather it came about in different
circumstances.
After being knocked off his motorised scooter and robbed of his pokies winnings on
Wednesday, Mr Dickinson was invited by Victorian Premier John Brumby to join the march
on Sunday.
The Rat of Tobruk has lived in Australia for 29 years but has never been in the Anzac
Day march and, while he says he won't be able to actually march, he's taken up the offer
to join in.
"It would make a complete change, I've never been in the parades here," he told AAP.
"I would like to go."
Mr Dickinson, who drove trucks in Italy, France and Egypt during World War II, managed
to fight off his attackers outside his nursing home in Hoppers Crossing.
A teenage girl and 29-year-old man have been charged and appeared in court on Friday.
Among the hundreds of Anzac ceremonies in towns across Victoria, the service in bushfire
ravaged Marysville will culminate with a Lone Pine sapling being planted in the town's
restored Reflective Garden.
The sapling from the iconic pine that stood on the hills above Anzac Cove on the Gallipoli
Peninsula was donated to the people of Marysville by Turkish Rotary club members who visited
earlier this year.
Members of Melbourne's Turkish community will march with veterans and citizens in Marysville.
Organisers of the Dawn Service at Melbourne's Shrine of Remembrance are hoping for
a record crowd of more than 40,000 people.
While the number of veterans dwindles each year, public interest in Anzac Day has jumped
in the past 15 years.
Although showers are forecast, the Anzac Day Commemoration Council is confident of a big crowd.
For the first time, fewer than 100,000 World War II veterans are still alive in Australia,
with about 1200 of them expected to march in Melbourne on Sunday, says Chris Handley from
the council.

Tae: Taekwondo kicks up storm of complaints
By Shigemi Sato
BEIJING, Aug 20 AFP - Taekwondo kicked up a storm of complaints against referees and
judges at the Olympic Games today as Canadian Ivett Gonda claimed she was robbed after
losing her opening match.
"Everyone is saying it's unfair. I got ripped. Everyone is saying I got ripped," said
the 22-year-old, fifth in Athens four years ago, after going down 2-0 to Sweden's Hanna
Zajc in the women's -49kg flyweight.
"I could crawl up and cry like a baby but I am trying to be strong. I guess this wasn't
meant to be, I guess God has other ideas for me.
"The reason for no points was they didn't see it," she said after her protest was rejected.
"All I can do is laugh or cry about it. I prefer to laugh."
Protests against referees and judges have been part of the taekwondo competition since
the Korean-born martial art made its Olympic debut in 2000.
"The judges were not fair, not just to me, but to Africa," complained Kenyan Dickson
Wamwiri after he lost to Taiwan's Athens Olympic gold medallist 7-0 in his first men's
-58kg bout.
He claimed compatriot Mildred Alango also fell victim to unfair refereeing when she
lost to world champion Wu Jingyu of China in her first bout.
"If the judges were fair the score would have been like 4:5," Wamwiri added.
Zajc faced misfortune in her second match after beating Gonda.
Her coach Chago Rodriguez said the Swede landed hits that didn't score.
"We were disappointed with that."
European champion and world No.5 Levent Tuncat of Germany also questioned the judges
after losing to Afghanistan's Rohullah Nikpai 4-3 in his first -58kg bout.
"For me it felt that I might have scored some more points," he sighed.
The fresh flare-up in refereeing controversy is a slap in the face of World Taekwondo
Federation president Choue Chung-Won. He has insisted fair officiating is imperative for
taekwondo to be retained as an Olympic sport.
"I will not hesitate to impose whatever is necessary, should you disgrace taekwondo
or the WTF in any way," Choue told a meeting of referees here on Monday.
"The referees and judges involved in inappropriate action or in making grave mistakes
will not be tolerated and will no longer be allowed to officiate at WTF-promoted events,
including this Olympic taekwondo competition."

Fed: Mental health institutional model must be examined: Nelson
BRISBANE, April 15 AAP - Federal Opposition Leader Brendan Nelson has called for public
debate on a return to treating the mentally ill in institutions.
Dr Nelson today said more money needed to go into fighting mental illness, including
psychiatry and community support schemes.
But institutions must also be reviewed, he said.
"I also think as a society we need to have a serious debate about whether or not we
need to go back toward an institutionalised model for a lot of these people," he told
ABC Radio today.
He said society had to look at how deinstitutionalisation had helped and hindered those
with mental health issues.
"I think in hindsight it's fair to say ... as a result of psychotropics - the drugs
that we introduced to treat people - we had significant improvements in the treatment
of mental illness and their behaviour.
"The argument was we could put these people out into the community.
"Then of course the money that was tied up in those magnificent residences that our
forebears had put aside for them didn't follow them into the community, they went into
other things."
He said many difficulties existed when people were treating themselves in the community
and he himself had been threatened by psychotic patients during his time as a GP.
Mental illness was also a major factor in the housing crisis, affecting about 30 per
cent of people who regularly sought support for homelessness.

NSW: Man charged with stabbing murder
SYDNEY, Dec 11 AAP - A man has been charged over a stabbing murder that left another
man dead in the stairwell of an apartment block in Sydney's west.
Police attended a service station on the Great Western Hwy at Kingswood about 7am (AEDT)
yesterday following reports that a 21-year-old was suffering from knife wounds.
The Kingswood man was taken to Nepean Hospital in a stable condition.
After speaking to the man, police went to a unit block about 400m away and found the
body of a 39-year-old man.
He had also suffered stab wounds, which investigators allege were the result of a knife
fight, a police spokeswoman said.
Crime scenes were established at both locations, forcing residents of the unit block
to remain in their apartments and the temporary closure of the highway.
Police later transported the 21-year-old from hospital to Penrith police station, where
he was charged with murder.
He was refused bail and is due to appear at Penrith Local Court today.

Vic: Williams's wife lashes out over other woman
MELBOURNE, April 27 AAP - The estranged wife of underworld serial killer Carl Williams
has lashed out at him in front of a packed courtroom in Melbourne.
Moments before the beginning of Williams's pre-sentence hearing today, Roberta Williams
tapped on the glass window behind which her husband was sitting in the dock and said to
him: "Pick her or your daughter."
Roberta Williams was referring to a woman who has appeared at a previous hearing to
support Williams, and who was sitting just metres from her at today's hearing.
Williams's parents, George and Barbara Williams, sat between the two women.
Crime family matriarch Judy Moran, the wife and mother of two of Williams's victims,
was sitting in the front row of the Victorian Supreme Court.
A court security officer warned Mrs Williams to remain quiet or she would be removed
from the court.
The hearing began when Justin Quill, a lawyer representing several media organisations,
made an application to Justice Betty King to film and broadcast Williams's sentence.
Mr Quill said the sentence would represent the final chapter of one of the greatest
law and order issues facing Victoria.
He said the proper, detailed and thorough reporting of the sentence had the potential
to increase the public's confidence in the judicial system.
Williams, 33, previously pleaded guilty to murdering Lewis Moran, his son Jason Moran
and Mark Mallia.
He is already serving 21 years for the 2003 murder of Michael Marshall.
The hearing in the Victorian Supreme Court continues.

ATSB spokesman Ian Sangston confirmed the accident would not be investigated.
He said flying at low altitude was hazardous and aircraft, including crop-dusting helicopters,

"In this instance, the aircraft was crop dusting and was confirmed to have hit a power

Vic: Eternal flame extinguished at Shrine
By Catherine Best
MELBOURNE, April 12 AAP - The eternal flame that burns at Melbourne's Shrine of Remembrance
has been extinguished by vandals armed with a beer bottle.
The flame, which has burned since 1954 in honour of Australia's war heroes was snuffed
out at 8.45pm (AEST) on Thursday, just weeks before ANZAC Day commemorations.
Shrine guards discovered the flame out on Thursday night and found a discarded beer
bottle smashed inside the gas burner.
Operators of the site are shocked that the perpetrator could be so disrespectful.
"Obviously (we are) very disappointed that this actually happened, assuming that it
was a malicious act and we can reasonably jump to that conclusion," Shrine of Remembrance
chief executive Denis Baguley said.
"(It is) disrespectful in the extreme given that the eternal flame is part of the WWII
memorial, it's meant to represent eternal life, it's a significant memorial to the service
and sacrifice of service men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice."
The flame has been deliberately extinguished three times in the past 12 years and occasionally
blows out in strong wind but Mr Baguley said vandalism at the site, off St Kilda Road,
was rare.
The flame has since been relit and police are investigating the incident, which Mr
Baguley says is particularly disturbing so close to ANZAC Day.
"It brings another focus on it without a doubt.
"The only good thing that potentially comes out of it is the fact that people are further
aware of the shrine and it's relevance to ANZAC Day," he said.
Acting Premier John Thwaites described the incident as appalling but said there was
no evidence linking it to Aboriginal protesters who have illegally set up camp in nearby
Kings Domain.
The protesters, who are refusing to leave after declaring a fire in the area sacred,
have until tomorrow to disband.
"This was quite an appalling act," Mr Thwaites said of the flame being extinguished.
"There's no evidence as to who the perpetrators are and we certainly urge anyone who
has information to report it to the police."
Sergeant Dave Spencer said the shrine guards - a division of Victoria Police who patrol
the site around the clock - were investigating the incident.
"I can't believe that anybody would put out the eternal flame ... it's a highly symbolic
place so any kind of damage is disturbing," he said.
Mr Baguley said beefing up security at the shrine would be considered, including introducing
alternative forms of surveillance.

Fed: Coonan encouraged by Trujillo's $5bn bush plan
CANBERRA, Aug 11 AAP - Communications Minister Helen Coonan says a plan by Telstra's
new boss to spend $5 billion rolling out hi-tech services to the bush is encouraging.
Sol Trujillo is due to outline his plan at a meeting with Senator Coonan, Prime Minister
John Howard and Finance Minister Nick Minchin in Canberra today.
The plan reportedly involves a boost to fibre cable, wireless and satellite services
in rural Australia.
"I think it's encouraging to see the new CEO looking at having some vision for Telstra,"
Senator Coonan told reporters.
"Obviously the government wants to have a look at what the proposal is.
"The government is very clear that we provide a good, strong competitive regime.
"We will not be rolling back regulation, but we are interested if there are some areas
of market failure. That's where we have now invested over $1 billion of taxpayers' money
to ensure that services in rural and regional Australia are adequate.
"I just want to see what elements of Mr Trujillo's package might address some of that."
Senator Coonan said the government was also interested in plans put forward by Telstra's
rivals, Optus and Austar.
Optus says it will build new telecommunications infrastructure in the bush if the government
allows it to use the money it tips into the universal service obligation scheme, which
subsidies services in rural areas.
Austar has also offered to build a wireless broadband internet network in the bush
if it receives some money from the government.
"There are a number of interesting proposals that obviously need to be looked at,"
Senator Coonan said.
"We're interested in where the market won't go or in under-served areas, so there can
be elements of all of these proposals that the government would consider."
Telstra today announced a record net profit of $4.45 billion for the 2004/05 financial
year, but warned that its underlying earnings this year would fall.
Senator Coonan said earnings from Telstra's traditional fixed line phone services appeared
to be under pressure.
"The fixed line is under pressure, but then there are other profit centres," she said.
"And most modern telecommunications companies have to look at new markets. I think
that's what Telstra will do."

Business Editors
SINGAPORE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 9, 2001
Commerce One, Inc. (Nasdaq:CMRC), the e-marketplace company, today announced that SupplyNet Ltd, a New Zealand e-marketplace, is using Commerce One solutions to power the first transacting, large-scale electronic marketplace in New Zealand.
Since licensing Commerce One MarketSite, the e-marketplace operating environment, in December 2000, SupplyNet has contracted with multiple buyers and signed on more than 30 suppliers who are now able to buy and sell goods using SupplyNet's e-marketplace. The company also has three industry-specific e-marketplaces in development. SupplyNet offers businesses of every size, including small-to-medium sized companies, easy access to the e-marketplace. The e-marketplace also provides dynamic trading services including forward and reverse auctions and the ability to electronically request proposals and quotes.
"The majority of businesses in New Zealand lack the IT capability to harness the potential that the e-marketplace environment can deliver. At the same time, many companies are looking at electronic procurement models to see how they can improve procurement practices," said Chris Canning, board chairman, SupplyNet. "We needed a technology provider that could back up their vision with leading strategic services, robust and scalable solutions (from simple B2B transactions to full-blown enterprise procurement) and innovative applications. We are delighted to be working with Commerce One to help businesses of any size in New Zealand benefit from an on-line trading community."
With the inclusion of SupplyNet, Commerce One powers leading e-marketplaces in every major country in the Asia Pacific region, including Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand.
SupplyNet was formed by Professional Services Brokers Ltd, (an investment company which also owns 100 percent of GSB Supplycorp Ltd, formerly the state-owned government procurement agency - Government Stores Board), Cullen Investments and the SEA Group. SupplyNet offers a range of e-commerce services including e-procurement applications, applications hosting and electronic product catalogue management for suppliers. The e-marketplace connects both public sector and private sector buying communities - domestically via the SupplyNet Exchange and globally via the Commerce One Global Trading Web. In addition, SupplyNet has begun to provide buying communities and industries with the infrastructure and technology needed to create their own unique and branded portals, leveraging the suppliers, catalogues and business services on the SupplyNet e-marketplace.
"We are very excited about the potential of the Commerce One Global Trading Web for our customers. This leading trading community will give New Zealand businesses unparalleled opportunities to access both Asian and global, on-line B2B trading communities. At the same time, companies around the world will be able to establish links to build business relationships with yet another resource-rich country in Asia Pacific," said Canning.
Neil Hudspith, senior vice president and general manager, Commerce One, Asia Pacific, said, "We believe that SupplyNet will act as a catalyst for wider B2B e-marketplace adoption across many different industries in New Zealand. We look forward to continuing our efforts with this important new e-marketplace."

M2 PRESSWIRE-16 August 2000-ClarITeam: Inefficient service level management erodes customer confidence in e-banks; ClarITeam launches White Paper on controlling the performance and availability of the IT system in e-banking (C)1994-2000 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD
RDATE:17082000
Service level agreements and management will prevent disastrous infrastructure failure on online banking sites, according to managed service provider, ClarITeam.
In a new White Paper, the company explains why online banks are losing the confidence of their customers and how this can be improved. ClarITeam cites infrastructure failure as the cause of down time of Internet banking sites. The paper explains that failure of many online banks is mainly due to lack of availability and low IP performance.
ClarITeam advises instigating service level agreements (SLAs) and service level management (SLMs) which give confidence to the bank and its customers that the Web site will remain stable. Such effective preparation, monitoring and measuring can prevent disastrous Web site downtime that can have a profound effect on customer retention.
"SLMs will enable e-banks to restore customer confidence by maintaining performance and anticipating problems following the adverse press recently received by online banks," said Claus Nicolas Kourim, president and CEO at ClarITeam. "With customers being ever more fickle and demanding, the IT systems a bank chooses to implement need to work faultlessly. If the systems do not have a performance and availability level of 100%, customers are going to go elsewhere and there are now enough competitors in the market with enough differing offerings, to make this possible. SLMs allow banks to restore customer confidence by maintaining performance and anticipating problems."

Court cancels fine on Poland's TP.(POLAND)(Telekomunikacja Polska)(Brief article)
Polish antimonopoly court SOKiK announced that it has quashed a fine of $122 million imposed on TP (Telekomunikacja Polska) around four years ago. At that time, the regulator had directed TP to pay 3 percent of the revenue earned in the previous year for not revealing the expenses incurred while launching Internet services and also for not separating Internet from its landline voice telephony services. TP spokesman Wojciech Jablczynski said that the company is pleased to stand vindicated because it always believed that the fine was uncalled for.
Research and Markets: Lebanon - 2011 Telecoms, Mobile, Broadband and Forecasts.
DUBLIN -- Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/60e52e/lebanon_telecoms) has announced the addition of the "Lebanon - Telecoms, Mobile, Broadband and Forecasts" report to their offering.
The Lebanese telecommunications market has suffered for many years from a lack of political will to make the changes necessary to free up the market in order for it to reach its potential. Consequently, despite a higher GDP per capita, Lebanon languishes well behind neighbouring Jordan in ITC development, with the inevitable consequences of lower economic and social outcomes than would otherwise be the case. As the years go by, Lebanon falls further and further behind with inadequate broadband services, restricted mobile services, no 3G or HSPA and rampant piracy. The new government, which took five months of negotiations to form following elections in June 2009, unfortunately looks no more capable of reaching agreement than have previous governments.
In early 2009 the outgoing government went some way towards releasing the pent-up demand in the mobile market. Lebanon has two government-owned networks, operated by Orascom Telecom of Egypt and Zain of Kuwait in return for a management fee, with all revenue going to the government. All prices are set by the Ministry of Telecommunications (MoT). Previous governments followed a strategy of limiting subscriber numbers and keeping tariffs high, resulting in the highest prices in the Middle East and the lowest penetration rates other than in desperately poor Yemen. Monthly ARPU levels were over US$60. In April 2009 the government took the radical step of lowering tariffs and increasing the maximum number of subscribers for each operator, arguing that total revenue would increase. This had a startling affect on subscriber growth.
For many years, governments have been unable to agree on whether to privatise the two mobile operators. Deadlines for decisions come and go. Consequently, the operators exist on temporary contracts with the attendant lack of incentives to improve services.
Broadband Internet services were very slow in coming to Lebanon and were not introduced until 2007, again leading to much frustration. The long wait for ADSL services, which were imminent' for over five years, was blamed variously on constraints in the capacity of the international cable, the lack of a functioning TRA to set and enforce prices, the difficulty of enforcing the ban on VoIP once DSL arrived (potentially having a disastrous effect on the state budget), and the protection of wireless broadband providers. The rollout of services was slow during 2008 and although the MoT now claims reasonable coverage, speeds remain slow and prices high.
The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) was established in the expectation of further liberalisation. The appropriate law was passed in 2002 and the decrees for its establishment were approved in 2004 but from 2004 to 2007 the TRA board remained unappointed, partly due to political infighting over nominations. However, since beginning work in 2007, the TRA has been energetic and active, in so far as it has been able without new broader Government legislation, and developed a Regulatory Framework designed to cover the entire spectrum of the telecom market.
Plans have existed for many years for the privatisation of fixed-line incumbent Ogero Telecom, together with the operational responsibilities of the MoT, starting with its conversion into a government-owned company Liban Telecom. This is most unlikely to happen any time soon.

Market Maker Surveillance Report. Top 6 Highest Net Buy Volume With Lowest Price Friction Stocks For May 26, 2009.
M2 PRESSWIRE-27 May 2009-BUYINS.NET: Market Maker Surveillance Report. Top 6 Highest Net Buy Volume With Lowest Price Friction Stocks For May 26, 2009(C)1994-2009 M2 COMMUNICATIONS
RDATE:27052009
BUYINS.NET, www.buyins.net, announced today its proprietary Market Maker Friction Factor Report for May 26, 2009. Since late October market makers are now required to be on the bid as much as they are on the offer and for like amounts of stock. This "fair market making" requirement is designed to prevent market makers from manipulating stock prices. On Tuesday there were 3,326 companies with "abnormal" market making, 4,458 companies with positive Friction Factors and 1,502 companies with negative Friction Factors. Here is a list of the top 6 companies with the highest net buy volume on Tuesday and lowest price Friction (bullish). This means that there was more buying than selling in the stocks and their stock prices rose faster with less Friction. Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F), Qwest Communications (NYSE: Q), Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT), Citigroup (NYSE: C), Altria Group (NYSE: MO) and News Corp (NASDAQ: NWSA). To access Friction Factor, Naked Short Data and SqueezeTrigger Prices on all stocks please visit http://www.buyins.net.
Market Maker Friction Factor is shown in the chart below:
Symbol Change % BuyVol Buy% SellVol Sell% NetVol Friction
F $0.13 2.47% 33,798,990 51.01% 27,221,536 41.08% 6,577,454 505,958

Analysis of the Friction Factor chart above shows that each of the six stocks mentioned above have high net buy volumes (buy volume - sell volume) and low price friction in their stocks. The Friction Factor displays how many more shares of buying than selling are required to move a stock higher by one cent or how many more shares of selling than buying moves a stock lower by 1 cent.
For example, the chart above shows Ford Motor with a Net Buy Volume of 6,577,454 shares and a Friction Factor of 505,958 shares. That means that it takes 505,958 more shares of buying than selling to move Ford Motor higher by one penny. This means the Market Makers are allowing the stock to move up higher as of Tuesday (with less price friction). And with one of the highest Net Buy Volumes, the combination of price friction and high net buy volume is bullish.

About BUYINS.NET
WWW.BUYINS.NET is a service designed to help bonafide shareholders of publicly traded US companies fight naked short selling. Naked short selling is the illegal act of short selling a stock when no affirmative determination has been made to locate shares of the stock to hypothecate in connection with the short sale. Buyins.net has built a proprietary database that uses Threshold list feeds from NASDAQ, AMEX and NYSE to generate detailed and useful information to combat the naked short selling problem. For the first time, actual trade by trade data is available to the public that shows the attempted size, actual size, price and average value of short sales in stocks that have been shorted and naked shorted. This information is valuable in determining the precise point at which short sellers go out-of-the-money and start losing on their short and naked short trades.
BUYINS.NET has built a massive database that collects, analyzes and publishes a proprietary SqueezeTrigger for each stock that has been shorted. The SqueezeTrigger database of nearly 2,550,000,000 short sale transactions goes back to January 1, 2005 and calculates the exact price at which the Total Short Interest is short in each stock. This data was never before available prior to January 1, 2005 because the Self Regulatory Organizations (primary exchanges) guarded it aggressively. After the SEC passed Regulation SHO, exchanges were forced to allow data processors like Buyins.net to access the data.
The SqueezeTrigger database collects individual short trade data on over 7,000 NYSE, AMEX and NASDAQ stocks and general short trade data on nearly 8,000 OTCBB and PINKSHEET stocks. Each month the database grows by approximately 50,000,000 short sale transactions and provides investors with the knowledge necessary to time when to buy and sell stocks with outstanding short positions. By tracking the size and price of each month's short transactions, BUYINS.NET provides institutions, traders, analysts, journalists and individual investors the exact price point where short sellers start losing money and a short squeeze can begin.

Island hopping in the Aegean sea.
Provided by 7DAYS.ae
The shipeCOs Tannoy crackled into life and a sense of anticipation filled the cabin. It was not yet 8am but this was to become the defining moment of the day. Clanking anchor chains had signalled our arrival at a new port. Now the reassuring yet authoritative voice of Captain David Warden-Owen, with his trademark slow delivery, proceeded to tell us where we were, how we got there, what the weather was like and what would happen next.
It would not be long before the impossibly youthful cruise director, Neil Horrocks, came on air with concise instructions to passengers booked on shore excursions. After a few days, we could barely contemplate leaving the cabin without this cheery wake-up call. We were aware of the itinerary across the Aegean Sea on our ship, the Spirit of Adventure, but it was strangely comforting to have the scene set each day.
Not that the announcements varied wildly. eC[pounds sterling]Welcome to the beautiful island of....eC[yen] and eC[pounds sterling]Gather in the main lounge at 9am for tour oneeC[yen] became familiar phrases throughout the two-week cruise in these beautiful sun-soaked waters. With a total of 6,000 Greek islands to choose from, a smallish cruise ship like the Spirit lets you experience as many in a fortnight as you might see in a decade of eCynormaleCO holidays.
Our route took in seven islands - plus Athens, two fascinating small towns on the mainland and the unforgettable Corinth Canal. Carrying just 350 passengers and with a draught of less than five metres, Spirit of Adventure is slender enough to berth in many small ports in the Aegean that are out of bounds to bigger eCyfloating hotelseCO.
ThateCOs not the only benefit. The ship - with a minimum age limit for passengers of 21 - offers superb service from its ever-smiling Filipino crewAa and impeccably maintained accommodation and facilities.
The 206 cabins range from standard inside cabins, to suites with a lounge area. Public rooms include the library, with well-stocked bookshelves, board games, reading areas and internet. Two restaurants serve excellent food and bars charge incredibly low prices. ThereeCOs also a choice of free excursions on every shore visit, as well as some additional trips, often taking in a whole day on an island, with a luxury coach, a guide, admissions fees and lunch charged about dhs300 per person.
Poor cruise director Neil, whose multiple talents included singing while playing piano and guitar, had the unenviable task of corralling 300 passengers into orderly groups departing at regular intervals for these tours. Our silver-haired skipper, his eCyfull seteCO of whiskers immaculately coiffed, often walked the decks in his whiter-than-white uniform to exchange pleasantries.
Captain Warden-Owen, who comes from a long line of seafarers, also hosted the obligatory cocktail party and often appeared at eCythe captaineCOs tableeCO in the main restaurant. Honoured with an invitation to join his table one evening, my wife and I enjoyed his company and forgave him when he left after the main course with the feeble excuse that it was time to set sail.
We joined the ship in Istanbul after a memorable coach journey from the cityeCOs airport in Asia, across the Bosphorus Bridge into Europe, and through the teeming streets of this historic capital. An initial day of gentle cruising in the Sea of Marmara and the Dardanelles strait took in a view of the Gallipoli monument and a pod of dolphins.
Once into the sparkling Aegean, our first stop was Lesbos, the third largest of the Greek islands, which lies only a few miles off the Turkish mainland and is still unspoilt by mass tourism. We berthed in Mytilene, a bustling coastal town boasting huge old mansions and picturesque narrow, cobbled shopping streets.
We chose an excursion on winding rural roads to the south coast for a visit to the renowned Barbagiannis ouzo distillery, where bottles of the fiery spirit - Lesbos makes the strongest variety in the Mediterranean - clinked off the Heath Robinson-like production line ready to cause hangovers in all corners of the world.
Our guide explained the story of Sappho, an ancient Greek poet whose poems focus on relationships between women. The jury is still out on whether Sappho herself crossed the boundary between platonic and physical affection. It was then on to the island of Kos, which has spectacular sandy beaches and some of the most interesting archaeological sites of the whole Mediterranean region. The highlight of our excursion was a visit to the Asclepion (named after Asclepius the god of healing), once an important centre of healing.
Dating from the 4th century BC but excavated from a wilderness only 100 years ago, this magnificent relic on a terraced hillside has breathtaking views over the Aegean. On Rhodes, possibly the sunniest place in Europe with an average 300 days of sunshine a year, a walking tour through the historic Old Town, with its twisting alleyways and mix of Byzantine, Turkish and Latin architecture, took us to a host of ruins including the must-see Palace of the Grand Masters, built by the Knights of St John in the 14th century.
Next came Crete, largest island in Greece, where the ship berthed in the busy capital of Heraklion (named after Hercules), handily placed for a trip to the ruined Palace of Knossos, built by the Minoans in around 1900BC. The Minotaur, a half-man, half-bull creature, roamed the palaceeCOs labyrinth until it was apparently slain by Theseus.
A stop in the lovely Aegean seaside town of Nauplion, the first capital of Greece after independence, was followed by a day in Athens where we ticked off all the sights, including the stunning Acropolis.
The tiny uninhabited island of Delos in the Cyclades does not, on the face of it, appear to be a potential calling place for a cruise ship. But a passenger told me it was her lifetimeeCOs ambition to set foot on Delos because of its place in legend (the birthplace of Apollo) and history. Unfortunately a strong wind blew up as we anchored in preparation for passengers to go ashore.
Captain David had to make the only negative announcement of the whole cruise - the sea was too bumpy for comfort, so the visit was cancelled. onditions were still turbulent in Mykonos, famed around the world for its cosmopolitan atmosphere and lively nightlife. We went ashore to explore Mykonos TowneCOs charming little streets of whitewashed houses, tiny boutiques and numerous restaurants.
Thankfully all was calm the next day as we dropped anchor under the steep black cliffs of volcanic Santorini where an eruption in 1650 BC, culminating in one of the biggest explosions in the history of the planet, caused the centre of the island to collapse into a massive crater that was filled by the sea.
Further eruptions have continued to ravage Santorini and in 1956 a major earthquake killed scores of people. Our guide may not have been joking when he said, eC[pounds sterling]An eruption is not included on this tour.eC[yen]
As the coach twisted its way up helter-skelter roads with fantastic panoramas laid out beneath us, the guide told us that Santorini, which had no electricity until 1975, exports two million pumice stones a year. Its clean water is so prized that iteCOs actually cheaper to wash your car with the produce of one of the islandeCOs nine wineries.
Cunning developers here know they can avoid taxes by building a church. They even build hotels with a church tacked on one side, resulting in 900 churches on one small island. If you have to see just one Aegean island, make it this one. Next came a day in the fascinating Peloponnese town of Monemvasia, often called the Gibraltar of Greece, and time to explore the massive walled fortress that once housed 50,000 Byzantine Greeks.
To reach Rome, Spirit of Adventure was towed by tugs through the Corinth Canal, the four-mile waterway which was scoured through the isthmus linking the Peleponnese peninsula to the rest of the Greek mainland. Only three metres separated the ship from the vertical cliffs that form the sides of the canal as our captain, broadcasting to decks crowded with camera-toting passengers, described how another cruise ship emerged badly damaged after scraping the sides.
Needless to say, we emerged intact, exhilarated, and flushed with our own spirit of adventure.

Lockheed Martin/Northrop Grumman TSAT Achieves TRL-6 Milestone.
The Lockheed Martin [LMT] / Northrop Grumman [NOC] Transformational Satellite Communications System (TSAT) space segment team has and achieved a key milestone: validating its laser communications technology developed for the Risk Reduction and System Definition (RR&SD) phase reaching Technology Readiness Level 6 (TRL-6).
The government uses TRL to measure how mature a technology is as it moves from concept or invention to an operational system. TRL-6 is met when a representative prototype system has demonstrated functionality in an environment relevant to its intended operation.
The TSAT team conducted a series of tests of the lasercom technology during the TSAT RR&SD phase, in compliance with the Air Force-directed testing at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Lincoln Laboratory.
After an independent validation of the function and performance of Northrop Grumman's lasercom subsystem completed in March, the team has since conducted environmental testing of critical components. The successful completion of these tests satisfied the TRL-6 criteria.
"Completing this key milestone on schedule demonstrates the effectiveness of our team's processes for developing critical space technologies," Alexis Livanos, corporate vice president and president of Northrop Grumman's Space Technology sector, said. "This essential technology continues to move TSAT on a solid path toward flight and the delivery of the capabilities needed by our nation's warfighters."
TSAT is the military's next-generation, protected, wideband satellite communications system for military and intelligence users.
Using high-speed optical communications, Internet protocol network routing, and communications-on-the-move capability, TSAT will provide a dramatic increase in connectivity, speed and mobility for future warfighters.
"Our team's success in advancing the key TSAT technologies will prove to be enormously valuable in the next phase of this critical program," Leonard Kwiatkowski, vice president and general manager, Lockheed Martin Military Space Programs, said.
The Lockheed Martin/Northrop Grumman TSAT space segment team is currently working under a $514 million RR&SD contract.
The team is competing against Boeing [BA] for the subsequent development and production phase of TSAT, which is planned to be awarded in late 2007 (Defense Daily, June 22).
Lockheed Martin Space Systems, Sunnyvale, Calif., serves as the prime contractor. Northrop Grumman Space Technology is responsible for the communications payload, including laser and radio-frequency communications and on-board processing. The U.S. Air Force is managing the program at the MILSATCOM Systems Wing, located at the Space and Missile Systems Center, Los Angeles AFB, Calif

LapLink Gold 12.(remote access software)(Product/service evaluation)(Brief article)
Another PC-only product, LapLink Gold 12 offers connection options galore: modem, local network, hosted LapLink Internet
relay (the company's PC tracking service) and even physical cables like the USB 2.0 cable in the LapLink box (as well as parallel
and serial cables not included).
The consumer background of LapLink requires typing in serial numbers, registering for license keys and key installation before
getting started, raising the frustration level. The company sent a boxed product, but its enterprise version relies on the
same remote-installation process and doesn't include the cables.
The multiple connection options make it easy to use LapLink on local networks and remote computers behind unknown firewalls.
LapLink's Internet Locater Service and LapLink Internet options track PCs a couple of ways. Remote systems become visible
when the LapLink client software is running on them and connects back to LapLink's relay or directly to your administrative
console.
The online account to manage remote PCs is linked from a choice on the help menu. Local systems are much easier to connect,
with address books for one-click connections and a scan utility for PCs running LapLink software.
Once connected, remote systems can be controlled, files exchanged through two large Windows Explorer-like windows, IM and
voice chats are supported, and file synchronization between configured folder pairs can be triggered immediately. LapLink
includes free antivirus protection for transferred files, with a year's worth of signature updates.
There are no troubleshooting tools or PC information displayed in this edition. Slow screen updates make Solitaire all but
unplayable, even between locally networked systems.
Overall, LapLink's boxed tools to connect remote computers will make this edition a good option for companies supporting mobile
workers.

Del Mar Database and Ellie Mae, Inc. to Enhance Integration of DataTrac and Encompass.
ORLANDO, Fla. -- Best-of-breed solutions offer small and medium-sized lenders a superior alternative to end-to-end solutions
Del Mar Database is enhancing the integration between its DataTrac(R) back-office mortgage banking solution and Ellie Mae's Encompass(R) loan origination and management technology. DataTrac enables lenders to leverage their existing technology investment to reduce costs, generate greater profits per loan, minimize errors using business intelligence and fund more loans with fewer people.
DataTrac connects a lender's mortgage applications to a single point of data input and management, reducing duplicate data entry and adding several layers of security that protect data integrity throughout the process. Integrations with point-of-sale (POS) solutions, such as Encompass, enable mortgage lenders to enhance existing technology investments in order to take advantage of efficiency and profitability gains without the time and cost associated with end-to-end solutions.
"Our solutions are unique because they don't require a lender to replace their existing software solutions," said John Walsh, president of Del Mar Database. "Partnerships with best-of-breed technology providers enable our customers to take advantage of leading-edge solutions, increasing market penetration and improving profitability. This partnership allows lenders who have already adopted Encompass, or who are considering adopting Encompass, to also quickly and easily automate the rest of their mortgage operations."
The Encompass(R) Mortgage Management System is designed to serve the individual needs of loan officers, processors and brokers and combines all the critical elements of a mortgage origination business into one seamless, integrated application that dramatically improves the way brokers and retail lenders function. The solution offers an at-a-glance loan pipeline view, seamless collaboration tools, personal workflow management, integrated contact management, marketing, business-building tools and secure, seamless Internet connectivity with leading lenders and thousands of settlement service providers.
"The demand for the Encompass Mortgage Management System has been overwhelming in the last 12 months," said Jonathan Corr, senior vice president of Products for Ellie Mae. "We have seen massive adoption by not only mortgage brokers, but by many mortgage bankers and retail lenders. Since bankers and lenders need additional capabilities to effectively manage their mortgage lending operations, this integration partnership with Del Mar Database provides these customers with a complete solution that will take their operations to the next level."
This enhancement to the existing data exchange will make the transfer of information from Encompass to DataTrac seamless.
